Opuntia macrorhiza

All Andrew's Plants has moved to AllAndrewsPlants.wordpress.com

You can find this post here on my new site for the full post and to leave comments.

This is my favourite cactus ever (of the two that I grow). It grows without protection in Toronto no problem. My drainage isn't even that good where I have it and it doesn't seem to care.

Pictures were taken in 2008 when it looked its best (It's really interesting to look through old pictures. Now I've got content for a few more posts as well!). Only a few flowers last year, with any luck we'll get a good show this year.

  1. Yes, but how are the glochids? You'll never tempt me with an Opuntia unless you tell me it's glochidless. (Unglochidified? Deglochidated?)

  2. We got them at the store in 4" pots with plastic sleeves and I only handled it with extreme care (and only while planting) and thick gloves. Definitely not glochoidless.

  3. Spines and me do not mix. That being said, the flowers and really lovely and it looks like a plant worth trying.

  4. The blossoms are spectacular! I'm no fan of glochids, either, but they can be avoided with a bit of care. I hope you get a good showing of flowers this summer!
