I have some behind the scenes things to fiddle around with like Categories/Tags, my Blogroll, the header etc but for all intents and purposes this blog is now live.
Feedburner seems to have done everything very well and if you only read this on an RSS Reader you may not even notice a difference.
Let me know if you run into any problems with anything and I'll try to work them out otherwise welcome - same blog, new location.

Moving to Wordpress

I think that my blog will be moving to Wordpress over the next day or two. I'm reading up on it and it should be a quick painless process to move my blog over to a Wordpress blog. At the same time I'll merge my old Zone 5 blog posts into the same Wordpress blog and delete it. This blog will redirect automatically (Edit - there may be some difficulties here - it will redirect but it may not do it automatically so that may delay the process a little bit) and the RSS Feed will remain the same with the (new today) Feedburner address. All in all it should be a quick and painless move and hopefully at the end of the day everything will be much better for it.
I've already been playing around a little bit in Wordpress and the blog is set up (set to private at the moment) and it seems like a very good publishing platform that does what Blogger can only do using hacks and workarounds by default. Please consider AllAndrewsPlants on hiatus until the move is finished, it may take longer than I'd hoped!

Really cool winter container idea + more

This container featuring Protea blooms was pretty sweet. Unfortunately I did not catch the name of the designer but if I can get it I'll post to give him credit. It was a pretty sweet container all around. They will apparently do well outside in a container over the winter provided they stay frozen. Freezing & thawing will do no good for them.
I may have managed to get my blog to redirect to the Google reader provided mobile friendly version of my site but just to test if you have a smartphone could you visit my blog by typing in the url and let me know if the redirect works for you?

Perennial Plant List finished

Last night I finished up my Perennial Plant List. It's longer than I expected. It includes everything hardy on my property that stays outside year round whether in the ground or in containers that I'm growing on purpose.
Iris 'Starship Enterprise' - one of a surprisingly high number of Irises
There are 97 distinct plants (I guess I didn't actually include bulbs... Daffodils & Crocus bring that to 99).
Sempervivum NOID (Large) - one of 14 hardy Hens-&-Chicks
The largest groups are Sempervivum with 12 (plus two Jovibarba), 11 Irises, 7 Sedum, and 7 Hostas.
There are 9 woody plants and a decent number of evergreens (especially if you include Sempervivum & Jovibarba) - only 2 "traditional" woody evergreens, my Boxwood and Euonymus.
Sedum hispanicum minus 'Blue Carpet' - one of 7 Sedum varieties.
The largest plant is my Syringa reticulata 'Ivory Silk'. I imagine that Sedum album 'Faro Form' is the smallest, but it's close.

Saintpaulia picture, mobile blogging and trying to find the best Android Blogging App.

I'm now testing Blogaway, it seems more polished than either of the apps I've already tried. Italics and bold are not as easy to use because you have to select the text first.The picture is of Saintpaulia "NOID0022".

(I guess I mentioned in an earlier, now deleted post but basically new phone = blogging on the run, if I can find an Android app worth using. The phone's an Acer Liquid E, the picture above was taken with the built in camera which is really not the best but works well enough in bright lighting.)
I've since cleaned up this post after the fact which I think I'll have to do whichever of the apps i use to get formatting right, I'll probably either use BlogAway or Bloggeroid. I'll keep both for now and see how I like them after using them a bit.

My apologies for not posting much recently (or for the next few days I imagine). My supervisor has gone on holidays and it's left me with a lot of extra work I wouldn't normally have to even think about. It's interesting and fun enough work but it does leave me very tired. My days off have been very busy as well but I am hoping to get some pictures taken and posts pre-written on Saturday for the next week. July's Bloom Day post will likely have few words, mostly pictures.

Picked this up a few days ago.
Sempervivum 'Cherry Tart' - Picture doesn't show how dark this one really is.
I imagine I'll be spending every spring from now on dividing and cutting back all these little filler plants I'm getting this year. Look for a post on some of my new tiny hostas coming soon when I can get some pictures.
I've also (finally) signed up for Twitter. You can find me here. I'll likely use it for little things that don't generally warrant a full blog post, or things I feel like mentioning but don't have a good picture to go along with etc...

I took this picture last year around this time but posting it now because it's flowering again.

Mostly though I'm posting because I've figured out what was wrong with my computer - the monitor was dead. I'm using a backup that's tiny with bad colour/brightness which I guess works well enough. But I'm not going to try to do anything with pictures in the meantime. There's a monitor I have my eye on that should be available on Thursday and I already have pictures taken and posts scheduled that'll take us past Thursday so if all goes as planned you won't even notice I was having problems, other than the fact I posted about them.

What's Going On & Garden Decisions (& More!)

Sorry for not posting as much as I might have wanted to. (Edit - apparently I tried to make up for it today? Sorry for the wall of text!) I had three days off from work while the weather was absolutely fantastic and I spent it outside, getting my yard clean and tidy. Beds edged, lawn leveled, newly leveled areas seeded, training my cat* and so on.
* She will run out of the house at the slightest opportunity. Rather than try to keep her from doing this at all I'm going to teach her that she's allowed to go outside and stay on the patio and will not get in trouble. So far it's working, when she gets out she'll lie down and roll over a few times instead of bolting for the fence. This is excellent for all involved. She's an indoor cat but she hates that so much. This is a good compromise. The other cat is not sure what to make of outside. Hasn't tried it and we're 100% keeping it that way.
I have a flower outside! A Daffodil was the first thing to open this year. Many more to come. It beat our 3 crocuses (getting moved to warmer ground) and a bunch of long past their prime Tulips which I don't think have flowered in years and are getting tossed very soon.
Daffodils flowering. This is not the patch that's flowering. And that was last year. Gets the point across. This particular patch looks like it'll be spectacular this year when it finally does open.
My Clematis 'Rebecca' is sending up many new shoots from ground level and starting to leaf out from the lowest part of the stems. There are smaller buds further up but they're not doing much yet. I thinned it down to a few main branches up high though I suppose I could have cut it back much further, it blooms on new growth though I'll be able to get good height from it this year by letting it grow off last years branches.
Speaking of vines I also gave my Hall's Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica its first major haircut in 5 years. It looks pretty sparse right now but it's leafing out fast and I know it'll recover in no time. I left a few thick branches on the trellis - by the time it's flowering I'm not sure if this pruning will even be noticeable.
My favourite Rose (NOID Red, as I call it) is growing. There was apparently zero dieback on it. It's growing all the way to the tips. I will have to cut it back though unfortunately. Not enough room to let it take over. (Did I mention that is still has last years dried leaves and flowers on it from last December when it was still flowering and had not shown a hint of mildew, black spot or yellowing leaves? If I knew its name I'd be telling you all to go out and buy 5 but right now I do not.)
Oh, and I guess we had Tarragon overwinter. Yay I suppose? It's in a pot I'd rather be growing Tomatoes in but I guess I can't complain. I guess I've missed prime Tomato sowing time? I guess I'll do that tomorrow. Tomatoes have got to be my favourite easy to grow "vegetable."
I guess we're at a lot of What's Going On but not many Decisions? Well Artemisia abrotanum is first on my list

It has been taking up a lot of space where it is. The idea had been to screen the air conditioner with it but long story saved for its own post not happening. It will be moved to two very tricky spots and likely ultimately thinned to just one (probably).
Euphorbia myrsinites has to go I think. I will miss it greatly but it doesn't justify the space it takes up. I might try to squeeze it in somewhere else but... we'll see. It's hard enough giving up a plant I don't like, and I actually like this one.
And in other news... 11 hour shift, spring must be here. Fantastic weather recently has brought people out in huge numbers. I spent today doing up containers. I will continue tomorrow. There are only so many ways to combine Pansies and Primulas. Ah well. It's better than some things I could be doing.
Oh, as for the theme it will stay as is for now. I've updated the header to include the variety that was in the older header and lets me keep the colours I love. It's still likely to change soon but I can live with the current theme a lot longer.

The storm that I think was supposed to hit on Tuesday is here now and it came on fast and suddenly there's wind (and a wind warning!), and cool air, and a bit of rain (there's that full on rain smell in the air though and it's fantastic. I know it's not that hot yet but it's too hot too fast. Lets enjoy spring first.

New Themes

I've created a few new themes for my blog. I was hoping to be able to put together a CSS Switching option where you could choose your own but it does not sound easy in blogger with the widgets etc. so at least for the time being it'll have to be only one at a time.
Here are the options:
Clematis.
Clematis 'Rebecca' is one of my favourite new plants (and one of the most common Keywords that people find this blog from Google).
Heuchera.
Heuchera 'Obsidian' & Calamint. The pairing was a happy accident, these two plants have worked together well since they found themselves as neighbours.
Hosta.
Hosta 'Striptease' was one of the first Hostas that caught my eye. Nice green colours with this theme.
Opuntia.
Opuntia macrorhiza is easily one of the most unusual and interesting plants in my garden.
Phalaenopsis.
Phalaenopsis. Classic, elegant, long lasting. My favourite NOID.
Osteospermum.
Osteospermum cv. is one of my favourite annuals. I had one last year and will almost certainly be getting the same one this year as well.
There will be a poll in the sidebar open for a week though odds are I'll have already changed the theme by then.
Comments encouraged. If I were to change the theme from time to time to cycle through these how often could it change without bothering you? Or do you prefer fewer changes with the theme?
And don't forget to visit my 100th Post to tell me if I should buy a Cactus or an Orchid.

Ending March off on a high note this is my 100th post. I couldn't have imagined having this much to say but I guess I've managed to come up with a lot of things to talk about.
I decided to get myself something nice to mark this milestone - but I haven't got it yet. It'll either be the Echinocactus horizonthalonius or the Epc. Yucatan I've also been considering. I still haven't really decided. Thoughts?
Astrantia major 'Dark Shiny Eyes'
At this point I've used the tag Hardy 16 times and Tropical 65 times. April starts tomorrow and there will be much more coming up in hardy plants over the summer, tropical... not so much - shouldn't be any new tropical plants being bought, basically just interesting things the plants I already have will be doing. Of course there will be just as much going on outside, especially at work.
And... yup. Actually that's about it. I'll have a new plant probably Saturday or at least I'll have made up my mind by then. And otherwise I should start to have pictures of things going on outside coming soon.

With the fantastic weather we've been having recently I've been called back to work from my extended winter "vacation" and I start Saturday. Posting may be reduced, at least at first until we start getting interesting plants in, when it may increase. I've got a few posts pre-written that will start popping up as well. Apparently they need all benches outside setup by Sunday. I imagine I'll be too tired and sore to want to do much posting after that.

I made some serious progress on the plant list today. I managed to photograph all Gesneriads on the main floor and tag unknown plants with "NOID ####" tags (not that many actually).
I'll be typing up those plants tomorrow and starting to work through the pictures. As they bloom of course I'll have to update things and check the IDs that I do have but it's some definite progress.
I counted:
24 Saintpaulia
8 Streptocarpus
6 Chirita
3 Kohleria
2 Petrocosmea
Of these there were only 9 NOID African Violets, 1 NOID Strep (which is a start from a leaf of another plant we have/had), and 1 Chirita which is sort of questionable (there are two labels on the pot, should be very easy to figure out once it grows more).
Maybe not so many upstairs and none in the basement. I think actually this plant list should be able to be "finished" fairly soon.

New Page - "Plant List"

Blogger currently has a new feature called "Pages" in testing. Very basic and easy (get to it by going to draft.blogger.com) and you'll find it under Posting/Edit Pages.
I've started a Plant List page (only covers tropicals and is still very much a work in progress).
May add an FAQ as well later on. Blogger supports/will support up to 10 of these stand-alone pages, which is more than enough for me right now, especially since trying to write up a plant list is hard enough. I'm dreading starting the Gesneriad section!

Well, I'm all out of pre-written posts and while there are things happening they are all the same things that have happened before/haven't stopped.
I'm pretty sure most of the African Violets and Streptocarpus that were flowering before either still are or have stopped, neither of which is exciting enough for a post.
There is root growth from the backbulb division of my Miltonia NOID and my Aerangis biloba (and a new leaf!). My Epicat continues to grow roots in passive hydroponic culture, though slowly - at least I know there are roots, and those roots are healthy. We're not out of the woods yet but I think the rest of the way should be easy going.
My Syngonium cuttings have all rooted well (except the one I didn't expect to live at all but we'll see).
My Ludisia discolor spike is now... about 2cm tall. Nothing exciting going to happen there for at least a month. My Phalaaenopsis in passive hydroponic culture should be open within a week or so, if not slightly sooner. My Paph NOID should be open very soon but still probably a few days away.
I don't know what this is. Anyone?

Don't think anything else is going on with any other plants. Still should be working on my plant spreadsheet. I'm done orchids and have made good progress on Aroids.
There's a Southern Ontario Orchid Society meeting coming up. Didn't make it to the last one because of terrible weather but next week looks alright (temps in the -8 to -3 range). Looking at the weather apparently Monday is supposed to be 7 and rainy? Almost makes me wish it were March! This January thaw, welcome as it is, is only making the idea that spring is so very far away is killing me.
I may not post for a few days or the posts may be brief and mostly filled with pictures.
I'm going to start on a few profiles for some "houseplants" you'll never see at a houseplant store.

Feed Scraping & Post Theft

Kenneth Moore just gave me the heads up that my blog posts, and his, and I think I saw a tiny part of one from Aerelonian have been stolen for use at a Feed Scraper/Content Scraper, a term I hadn't heard more than a few hours ago but speaks for itself.
First thing to protect yourself from all sites of this nature whether you've seen that particular site or not - Blogger defaults your Site Feed to "Full" - Change this to "Short" or "None" (Settings, Site Feed and it's the first option).
Here's this post, as scraped with Site Feed limited to "Short"
Second, and I haven't tried this yet, read this, and this and some of the links in each. Should work against sites you know of but until you've found them you'll have to resort to limiting your Feed to just a part of your post.
Here's a site with information specific to Blogger (a lot of the sites above refer to other blogging sites like WordPress).

Thanks for the advice Dave. I asked them firmly but nicely to remove all my posts and they were gone within 15 minutes. I don't approve of what they do, but at least they co-operated and took down the posts when asked.

I have decided after some time away from my previous blog that I just won't have enough to talk about if I only talk about hardy plants. The last several posts at Zone 5 were about houseplants anyway so I figure I should just have one blog where I can talk about anything - inside, outside or anything else related to plants I may think of.
Kohleria 'Peridot's Mango Martini'
I imagine I'll have much much more to talk about and hopefully some of that will be of interest to most of you! I'll be working on a layout and colour scheme over the next few days and should be able to get a post or two as well, even if they're just little picture posts. There are two plants as well I'm waiting for buds to open that I'm not able to wait patiently for much longer so expect pictures of those hopefully soon as well!
