Much like 'Cobweb,' 'Oddity' is a must have in any Sempervivum collection.

New Sempervivum 'Belladonna'

This is officially my favourite Sempervivum and I think I can say that with no hesitation. Gorgeous silvery colour, velvety texture, thick leaves and compact rounded rosettes. Pictures online show an attractive red winter colour as well.

It was pricey at $8 (around a 5" pot and beautifully grown so actually not a bad price) but I got a great deal (40% off) on this and another $5 Sempervivum (which "officially" "completes" my collection) I'll post pictures of once I get some pictures that actually make it look good. It's a bit of an Oddity.

New Plant: Sempervivum 'Cherry Tart' & Twitter

Picked this up a few days ago.

Sempervivum 'Cherry Tart'
Sempervivum 'Cherry Tart' - Picture doesn't show how dark this one really is.

I imagine I'll be spending every spring from now on dividing and cutting back all these little filler plants I'm getting this year. Look for a post on some of my new tiny hostas coming soon when I can get some pictures.

I've also (finally) signed up for Twitter. You can find me here. I'll likely use it for little things that don't generally warrant a full blog post, or things I feel like mentioning but don't have a good picture to go along with etc...

New Plants: Sempervivum cvv. & Jovibarba sp.

This is the biggest group of new purchases and possibly for me the most interesting.

Sempervivum cv.
Sempervivum cv. - No name but really nice colour on this cultivar.

My sister heard I was making a succulent container and mentioned she wanted one too. She is not a plant person, she basically knows one succulent, "Hens & Chicks," and that's what she asked for.

Sempervivum 'Ohio Burgundy'
Sempervivum 'Ohio Burgundy' - Love the furry leaf on this one and the colour is fantastic as well.

"Well I like Hens & Chicks" I think to myself. I'll just find myself several different types that I really like and divide off some "Chicks" to keep.

Sempervivum arachnoideum 'Cobweb'
Sempervivum arachnoideum 'Cobweb' - It's hard to make up a containers with around 7 different Hens and Chicks without getting into this type. Interesting but I may not keep any for myself long term...

Sempervivum cv.
Sempervivum cv. - This is a monster. That Sempervivum is in a gallon sized pot that it more than fills, bigger across than my hand.

So at the end of the day I get a fantastic excuse to buy myself several different interesting Sempervivum and everyone is happy.

But wait! There's more!

Then we got an order from one of our more specialist perennial growers and what's that? Jovibabra? Unexpected but so awesome. Only two different types but I'd already picked up both before I noticed they were not actually just really interesting Sempervivum cvv..

Jovibarba hirta 'Hedgehog'

Jovibarba sobolifera
Jovibarba sobolifera - My absolute favourite plant from this post. Love, love, love this plant.

Jovibarba sobolifera
Jovibarba sobolifera again for good measure.

We have some clay Strawberry Pots for only $10 (with an opening at the top that should fit a gallon pot and 6 openings around each more than able to hold a 4" pot) and I'll grab one for these for my sister (The big one at the top, the others + 'Oddity' around the sides when I can find it). I'll post a picture when I have it done. Maybe I'll get two of these containers and do the exact same mix up for myself.

Succulent bowls

I found two 12" shallow clay pots in my garage I'm planting up with succulents this summer. So far costs are staying low by using donated cuttings and found scraps.

Here are the early parts of the first bowl, with a Sempervivum cultivar that's been shared around and around on the street - it's a large growing type that is extremely prolific. A decent sized patch will end up with several blooming plants each year but will fill in before you notice a hole once they're done flowering. The whole plant turns dark red over the winter (you can still see some of the colour at the tips) and keeps some of the colour over the summer. I also have a few cuttings off an unknown Sedum (Sedum rupestre? It does look very much like a blue form of 'Angelina' - maybe 'Blue Spruce?'). I'll probably be planting some of this around the base of my Clematis alongside my Hosta 'June' - the blues can play off each other well and the textures will contrast beautifully.

I think I'll be picking up a bag of Pea Gravel for a top dressing. I'm thinking about adding in a little pot of ice plant (Delosperma sp.) and a different looking 'Sempervivum' as well ('Oddity' or 'Cobweb' or something like that). Either the same or a different Sedum will round things out on the other side of the pot. I guess I could include a non-succulent drought tolerant plant like Woolly Thyme as well. It's good practice I guess because I'll be doing up containers like this with hardy succulents at work. I can try different combinations there too (and price is really no big deal). It's nice having succulents that would typically be low ground covers in a container where they can be appreciated up close.

I'm thinking of going more tropical with the second container with Echeveria, Sedum, and maybe a Kalanchoe thyrsiflora. Maybe some random unlabeled succulents I can get for something like $4 each plus cuttings to fill.
