Aglaonema 'Crete' update

All Andrew's Plants has moved to AllAndrewsPlants.wordpress.com

You can find this post here on my new site for the full post and to leave comments.

I posted about this plant back in October when I brought it home from work. It looked pretty sad at the time but after a little trim of the damaged leaves, a place in the sun and some time it's become quite a nice little houseplant.

Hoping it can keep up its improved appearance and get even more full over the next year because it's really grown on me.

(... and aren't you glad it isn't another orchid post.)

Give it a few years and I expect you'll start to see this one in those Christmas baskets with poinsettias and mixed greens.

  1. Hmmm. I am trying to decide whether that would be bad. Would I like the Aglaonema better by contrast with the evil, evil poinsettias, or would I like it less because I only see it in connection with, and therefore associate it with, poinsettias?

For now, I think I'm just going to hope that it never comes to that. I'd really rather not hate 'Crete' before ever trying to grow one.

  2. I don't think I've ever minded Dieffenbachia or Dracaena marginata any more or less because of the association.

I suspect though that the reds are a little too pink and the greens are a little too olive to go well with poinsettias... Kalanchoe might be a more likely pairing.

  3. Hm... I've steered clear of Dieffenbachia for just that reason, actually. I only got one because it was sooooo on sale the other week, and, y'know, I'm an addict. But, then, "Crete" is cute and named after my favourite ancient-civilization-inhabited island!

  4. I've steered clear of Dieffenbachia too, though I don't have a reason. They just don't seem like the type of plant I'd get along with all that well, though I like well enough... Maybe just put off by the size some of them can reach.

I'd pick up a Dieffenbachia 'Sterling' pretty fast if I saw one though.

  5. Hm, speaking of not getting along well... Seems our blog posts are being, um, stolen.

Yours here and here, mine here, here, here... It goes on.

The editor of Washington Gardener magazine let me know she found one of 'em--I found the other, and then saw your posts. I e-mailed one of the blogs to figure out what the heck is going on, but I just wanted to let you know about it. I'll update you when I find anything out.
